For Thanksgiving, we normally go out of town with my in-laws. For Christmas Eve, we have dinner with my mom and sisters. Christmas morning we have breakfast with my husband’s family and then lunch with my entire family! We normally have traditional food on Christmas, but we try and do something a little different for Christmas Eve – chili or spaghetti!
We start on Christmas eve with what we call a junk food fest. We have done this for about 20 yrs. now. We have chips, dip, little smokies, meatballs, cookies., pizza snacks…not a healthy meal but not heavy cooking because on Christmas we have the traditional Ham meal with all the trimmings after opening presents!
We have a small family. My dad is an only child, and my mom only has one sister, who lives in the same town as all of us, so, every other year we have Thanksgiving at my aunt’s and every other year it is at my mom’s. We of course have turkey and ham. Sometimes, we have brisket. We always have to have a chocolate pie and a pecan pie. My grandma taught my mom and aunt how to make them and now that she has passed, we all have a slice of “Mema’s” pie. For Christmas, we have breakfast at my parent’s house. My dad used to cook breakfast for our family on Sunday mornings so my mom could get the kids ready. My dad is now famous for his biscuits and gravy and scrambled eggs. For Christmas dinner, our request every year is my mom’s fried chicken! The best!
we stay home on our own for christmas day and my husband cooks. our breakfast is eggs benedict with homemade hollandaise sauce (which he whips up only one day a year).
Great post Holly! Thank you so much for helping to get the word out.
My parents and I have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and then we go visit my cousins and aunts and uncles in the evening. Mom and I make the soup on Monday, pies on Tuesday, stuffing on Wednesday and Dad cuts all the veggies. We order pizza on Wednesday night for dinner. We’ve been doing this for more than 30 years! Thanksgiving Day is my favorite day of the year!!!
Wow, cook only once per month? I’ve GOT to try this! Our family has the fruitcake tradition. Personally, I really wish they would stop. LOL
We have started a new Thanksgiving tradition. We spend it tailgateing for the Alabama/Auburn game. It has been fun to see what you came make in a motor home. 🙂 Christmas is spent traveling to in-laws families. I love the idea of once a month cooking!
I love to cook Thanksgiving dinner for family and friends. We have turkey, my grandmother’s famous stuffing recipe, mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and homemade rolls. Yeah, I’ll toss in a green vegetable but I’m all about the turnips.
Never tried Once a Month Cooking, but would be willing to give a try.
We usually have the traditional turkey dinner for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I will fix some kind of breakfast casserole for Christmas morning after presents.
We always get together with family for the holidays. Turkey is the Thanksgiving fare, and for Christmas we do a prime rib. Yum!
On Thanksgiving we go to my grandmother’s for midafternoon lunch. On Chriistmas eve we go to my inlaws house and on Christmas morning we stay home and enjoy time with our children and for Christmas day lunch we go to my grandmothers. We usually do turkey and dressing on Thanksgiving and ham and dressing on christmas
WOW! WOW! are you serious? “once a month cooking”? that would be awesome.. I have 2 brothers and my mom. My father is no longer with us. We always get together for Thanksgiving and Christmas at different places. My brother’s one year, my house the next year, my mom’s the next ext, ext, we always swap up each year. Thanksgiving we have a huge meal, Turkey, Ham, homemade mashed taters, (not the instant) homemade noodles. my mother always does the taters and noodles and the pumpkin pie.mmm mmm mmm that woman can cook !!! fried green beans and sweet taters are also a big part of our dinner as well as the dressing. Our family loves to camp, so one year we decided to have Thanksgiving on the river .. ha!! all the food was really hard to get together in a little camper but we managed and the food was great. At Christmas we always do finger foods and end up with a “feast” of everything you could imagine from sausage balls, to hot dog salad sandwiches.. Once a month cooking sure would be awesome to learn. 😉
Since we all have family in different directions on Thanksgiving day, we meet up at my brother in law’s house and all bring a dessert and taste all we have on the table and vote on the best one —we have been doing this for almost 20 years now and I must say it has been my favorite way to end the day . On Christmas Eve we meet a there and bring covered dishes and exchange presents and eat again!
OMG!! I so need this to help me this year!! My dh signed me up to do the Turkey day meal and I am not known for getting it out of the oven on time so everything is just perfectly warm and ready to eat. I have a feeling this may be the ticket to getting a little closer to my goal. I am scared out of my mind. Usually my MIL does it all and very well I might add. She is kind of a Martha if you know what I mean. If I win maybe I just won’t share my secrets and let her wonder how I pulled it off. Ha 😉 what a great offer thx!
Our family usually rotates locations for Christmas dinner. Sometimes its at my house and sometimes its at my parents. Right now there’s 9 of us so our meals are pretty big. One of our foods that are a staple for your holiday dinner is pernil or roasted pig. Mmmm yummy!
We usually go to my Mom’s house for Thanksgiving Dinner. My sisters and their fammilies try to make it in too but sometimes they are unable to since their husbands are in the military. Mom does all the cooking!!! We try to get down to her house in time to help her and sit the table for 15-17 people. We have so much food…turkey, dressing, relish tray, mashed potatoes, baked beans, deviled eggs, cranberry sause, green beans, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese and lots of pies!!! YUMMY!! Christmas Eve is celebrated with my husband’s family, Christmas morning is my our alone time with our kids and Christmas Night is celebrated with my mom,dad and rest of family!!! BUSY TIME!!
Well our traditions are changing since I just got married about 1.5 yrs ago. My husband and his son didn’t have any traditions, where as I came with a long line of them! I come from a large family where we did the turkey and ham during Christmas along with a big homemade breakfast that morning. This year we are going to be trying more of my traditions 🙂 I have to say I have already been in the Christmas spirit since June (when I started my shopping!). So I would LOVE this book!
We visit both sides of our family but with the kids getting older I am wanting to host a dinner at our home so this would be awesome to win Thank You!
Being a working mom of 3 boys, I would love this cookbook so I can be prepared ahead of time for the holidays. My boys are younger and I am always looking for ways to get ahead so I can actually enjoy the holidays spending time with family and friends instead of missing out while in the kitchen cooking for the events.
For Christmas all of my family and my husband’s family come over for dinner. They all love Prime rib, but it stinks not getting time with them while I’m cooking. Can’t wait to see some once a month recipes!
out of town with
I have a very large family on both sides – 5 brothers & sisters on my side and my husband has 10 brothers and sisters. We all live nearby so for every holiday, we have one big dinner with his family then we have another big dinner at my parent’s house. Somehow, I’ve managed to avoid having to cook at my house 🙂 I’m not the best cook in the world, but I’d love to get into it more and learn some new recipes!! For Thanksgiving, my mom has literally made the same set items ever since I can remember and still to this day – Turkey, bacon & onion green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, rolls, pickles & olives, and fruit salad. 🙂
out of town with mother in law christmas eve morning and all the kids over christmas eve.
Apparently, green bean casserole wasn’t a staple until I was old enough and lived on my own, so I became the person in the family to make it. I absolutely love green bean casserole for holiday meals and I make it for Thanksgiving and Christmas get togethers with the family! And they love it! 🙂
We have a big family dinner with my Uncle’s family and our family and my Grandma. We have all of the usuals-turkey, mashed potatoes, etc. On Christmas morning, just my Mom, Dad, Sister and her family and me and my family all get together to open gifts and eat poviticia and then have Polish sausage and a big meal later in the day!! So yummy…makes my mouth water just thinking about it!! 🙂
Thanksgiving is full of family and shopping plans for Black Friday. Such a wonderful day. Christmas dinner if fixed on Christmas Eve and eaten. Christmas day is filled with presents, putting presents together, relaxing and leftovers. The one day a year I pretty much do absoulutly nothing.
