There’s an issue I wanted to let you know about right now.  It’s not officially a recall, but that appears to be because they don’t yet know exactly where they have been sold.

According to the CDC, a total of 141 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 20 states.  The number of ill people identified in each state is as follows:  Alabama (7), Arkansas (3), California (2), Georgia (1), Illinois (17), Indiana (13), Iowa (7), Kentucky (50), Michigan (6), Minnesota (3), Missouri (9), Mississippi (2), New Jersey (1), North Carolina (3), Ohio (3), Pennsylvania (2), South Carolina (3), Tennessee (6), Texas (1), and Wisconsin (2).

This number includes 2 deaths.

According to the CDC they came from a farm in southwestern Indiana.  There is not yet a specific list of stores and locations where these were sold so they have the following warnings (from this ABCNews Article):

• Cantaloupes often bear a sticker that says where they were grown, so health officials have advised consumers to check the sticker and throw away melons from Indiana.

• “If no sticker is present, consumers should inquire about the source,” a CDC page devoted to the outbreak says. “When in doubt, throw it out.”

I’m not sure about you guys, but I’m thinking we’re just gonna stay away from cantaloupe for a while.
